With his ‘Ten Principles for Good Design’, German industrial designer Dieter Rams developed rules to help designers understand and find their way. Above all, ‘good design is environmentally friendly’ has now become the zeitgeist and standard for architects. These principles have been holistically combined in the newly opened The Emerald building in Luxembourg City, which has been certified as BREEAM Excellent and WELL Gold. The first CO₂-neutral office building in the Benelux region was designed by British architect Andrew Phillips. The building owes its name Emerald to the dark green, sloping anodised aluminium mullions. This sun protection system reacts to the changing light conditions throughout the day and the seasons. The main tenant is Advanzia Bank, whose CEO Nishant Fafalia sees the Emerald building as an important step towards a sustainable future for Luxembourg.
The large open-plan workspaces inside place the employees at the centre. Plenty of daylight, fresh air ventilation and a panoramic view are complemented by natural materials such as light-coloured wood and plants. The design is stringent and puristic, the basis for our entire Liquid Line product family, which forms a single unit with the architecture.
